You're right: this is something that takes our constant diligence and it is probably made more so by the world we have been raised in.

But I think it's awesome that you are meeting a challenging point in your own life by working on your awareness. This guarantees you'll experience growth and new discoveries.

This is a great post. I have read Eckhart Tolle's "Power of Now" and "The New Earth", and both books have inspired me greatly.

I have come to realize that this concept of awareness and presence is something that has to be worked on diligently. It is almost as if we have to re-program ourselves into undoing years of being identified with our minds.

Initially, I like the brief moments of stillness and peace when I am able to open a portal to the Unmanifested. However, it doesn't take long for the mind to rush in with distractions! I am still training myself to watch the mind and laugh at it, and I notice that that with practice, this is becoming easier and easier.

For me, what helps to pull myself to the moment is regular meditation and swimming. I am in an exceptionally difficult situation, and I am using this period of my life to master this art of awareness and presence. My desire to do so is stronger than ever!

Any insights into this post is welcome!
